About the book
A good pop song is like a full life polaroid: an often recognizable report of an experience, an expression of a mood, a social statement sometimes. In three chords and truth, culture reporter Rob van Scheers tries to capture the cycle of life – from birth to death & beyond – in pop songs. He follows the makers of those songs closely. From Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan through Frank Zappa, Rolling Stones and Talking Heads to Rufus Wainwright, Stromae and everything in between. His music stories are characterized by a wealth of knowledge, a wealth of details and a broad look and are written in a smooth, fitting style. Three chords and the truth is an adventurous and contagious discovery tour for every music lover!
I’ve been wanting to read this book for quite a while now and I finally decided to buy it a couple weeks ago. I love non-fiction books and I love music, so I was happy that I could finally start in it. And what a joy it is to read this book. If you are a music lover, this book is for you. It includes stories, interviews and musical life lessons that will stick with you forever. No matter what your age, if you like to know more about music, this book is for you. Rob van Scheers writes smoothly and also with a bit of humor about his own personal experiences with some of the musicians and he is a true story teller. What I also really like are all the lists of songs that he recommends, suiting to the theme and chapter.
I have only one critic; where are the musical heroes of our time? Naming Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry and many more great artists. They are mentioned maybe once or some of them not at all. I thought that was a little disappointing. Maybe Rob van Scheers doesn’t have stories about them, but I still find it odd that they are not included in the book. And where is David Bowie and Michael Jackson? One of the biggest musical heroes ever aren’t even mentioned once.
I really enjoyed reading this book and this is definitely that kind of book that you can pick up many more times to read a couple bits from it, but I hope in the future Rob van Scheers will write another book where he will include Michael Jackson and Bruno Mars. Even though they are not included in this one, it is still a must-have for every music lover.
