I read the book De Sekte by Mariette Lindstein. Read here my review.
About the book
For years Mariette Lindstein was the right hand of Scientology leader David Miscavige. After 27 years of being a member and working in the highest regions of the movement, she dramatically escaped. She decided to use her experiences as an inspiration for a thriller trilogy. De Sekte (The Cult on Fog Island) is the first one.
The book follows the main character Sofia Bauman. After she’s graduated from the university, she is fascinated by the ViaTerra doctrine and Franz Oslwald’s inspirational life story. The charismatic leader, Franz Oswald, has developed the ViaTerra doctrine, which has an irresistible appeal to celebrities and leading politicians. She does not yet know what she wants with her life, but is charmed by Oswald and accepts the job he offers her. Soon she finds out what huge sacrifices she has to give. And when the idyllic summer ends and an impenetrable fog opens the island, she wondered if ViaTerra is such a noble movement as she thought initially. She also finds that there is a big difference between Oswald’s public image and its actual intentions. However, there seems to be no way back to her former life. Because nobody can ever leave ViaTerra …
I was very interested in reading this book, because the story is something different and I always wanted to know what drives people to join a cult. What makes it even more interesting is that the author was part of a cult many years, which makes it even more credible and almost sounds like a thriller based on true events. However, the author makes clear that the events that take place are fiction, but she is only inspired by her own experiences at the Scientology.
I really liked this book. I thought it was thrilling, exciting and sometimes a little bit scary. I say scary, because I cannot imagine that some things would happen in real life, but I think they do. And the things that happen in the book are just terrifying and I cannot imagine my life to be like that. I also cannot imagine that anyone would want to join a cult, because when I read this book, nobody wants to.
The author writes very clear and describes the events and places very well. I can really make a vision on what it would be like and how it would look like on that island. It’s very interesting to see the main character Sofia evolve from a naive teenager to some sort of mean leader herself and then changes her opinion every single time. Who has she become and how will her future look? The more the story evolves, the weirdest and most bizarre things happen on that island and Sofia is determined to find out what Oswald is hiding and why he has become who he is today. This book would make a good movie.
